Matteo Thun is a Milan based architect and designer who was born and raised in the bilingual German and Italian speaking region of South Tyrol, Italy. After studies with Oskar Kokoschka at the Architecture University of Florence, he co-founded the “Memphis” group in Milan in 1981 with Ettore Sottsass. In 1984, he opened his own studio in Milan and, in 2001, he founded Matteo Thun & Partners.

Antonio Rodriguez is a Spanish designer who has been partnering with Matteo Thun since 2003. They established an architecture, interior, styling and product design firm, with offices in Milan and Shanghai, creating and developing specific Asian projects with Italian creativity. The constant research for simplicity and functionality generates a timeless and iconic design, away from being solely visual. The proven competence in product and interior design is based on the close dialogue with clients’ technical experts always striving for innovation.

Thun and Rodriguez are presenting several products with different companies in Milan. At Salone del Mobile 2018, the duo will be previewing Arlon, the natural evolution of Overplan (Hall 10, Stand C23/ D20). Designed for the brand Désirée, Arlon possesses a simplified shape using the warm, natural materials typical of these artistic architects’ creative approach to product design. The Arlon collection comprises modular furniture systems in strong and fresh colours. Flexible elements, sofas and sideboards invite anyone to play with different dimensions for various settings. The sofas are airy, elegant and soft, and the sideboards are refined storage elements in stained Elm wood, Creta leather and glossy lacquered wood.

In hall 07, stand G 14, the Matteo Thun Atelier and the brand Very Wood will be presenting Lisboa, a dining chair in ash wood, with a seat handwoven in artificial rope, in one or two colours. The durable weightless chair transforms into a relaxed armchair version. A chair where lightness meets comfort, Lisboa is perfect for boutique contract projects.

From hand-painted to hand-tufted, the Italian rug company Loloey turned architect and designer Matteo Thun’s personal watercolours into carpets, for both residential and hospitality uses. Herbs, watermelons, berries and agave take centre stage in this joyful collection, presented in hall 10, stand F32. Seamless patterns performing motifs of nature and herbs are converted into exquisite rugs composed of natural elements such as wool, bamboo-silk and linen. The contract offer includes wall-to-wall versions made from wool and synthetic threads.

Thun also designed Avenue for the wood flooring company Listone Giordano. The power of imagination is able to transform a tree into a pure geometric form reminiscent of New York’s atmospheres in the early 1900s. After stripping away all that is superfluous, what remains is the elegant rhythm of lines and backgrounds that draw a balanced grid where life flows. Avenue is inspired by nature and its beauty, with a geometric design for wooden floorings. The flooring can be admired at Via Macedonio Melloni 3, in the Milano Contract District.

Finally, walk a little more into hall 24, stand D15/D21. Along with Falper, Thun and Rodriguez will present a beautiful washbasin. Walnut wood, copper and ceramics form this particular, pure wash basin with changeable parts. Have a great Salone del Mobile 2018.
