Milan men’s fashion week 2015: Things to do 24 hours before

Milan, fashion capital where style is in the very air people breathe; a place rivaled with New York, London Paris and Tokyo, in the ubiquitousness of “fashion as everyday wear.” Italy is also regarded as the very epicenter of luxury fashion craftsmanship and, no wonder when the top designers from New York, Paris and London seek artisans with the greatest skill and attention to detail to craft their products, they choose the ateliers of Italy, and then these two things are mixed up, fashion and design, Milan becomes world fashion show icon on this time of the year.

Fondazione Prada’s New Headquarters

Located in a renovated distillery dating to 1916, the new Prada foundation headquarters span more than 205,000 square feet. Three buildings — Podium, Torre (“tower”) and Cinema, which transforms into an open-air theater — have been added to the existing seven. One of these, called “Haunted House,” is covered in gold leaves and houses a permanent installation conceived by Robert Gober and includes two works by Louise Bourgeois.

The foundation contains several exhibits, ranging from “Serial Classic,” dedicated to classical sculptures, to “An Introduction,” which collects more than 70 artworks, showing the different inspirations that led Miuccia Prada and her husband Patrizio Bertelli to create the foundation. Among the pieces on display are works from the Sixties by the likes of Yves Klein and Piero Manzoni; a “Madonna del Bauhaus” from 2012 by contemporary artist Francesco Vezzoli shown on an engraved wooden cabinet from the late 15th century, and works by Jeff Koons, Lucio Fontana, Roy Lichtenstein and Mario Schifano. The last part of this group includes a selection of cars reworked by artists including Carsten Höller, Rosemarie Trockel, Gianni Piacentino and Sarah Lucas.

Arvi’s Framesi Boutique

Arvi’s Framesi Boutique, a new concept salon tucked inside a stately courtyard on Viale Montegrappa, opened quietly six months ago — and founders Sabrina Arvizzigno and Patrizia Annovazzi want it to remain an oasis of calm, where customers can pamper themselves and receive the undivided attention of a small team of beauty professionals in a sleek setting outfitted with Japanese furnishings. With Made in Italy hair and skin products from Framesi and Bioline, and nail polish from Estrosa, Arvi’s offers a full range of services, from massages and haircuts to manicures and makeup consultations, and even personal shopping assistance.

Gong

The Chinese Liu family recently opened Gong, its third Milanese restaurant in Corso Concordia, near Piazza Risorgimento. Diners will find a mix of Chinese and Japanese delicacies — say, cherry shrimp tartare, or a dim sum composition of four different steamed dumplings — all whipped up by chef Keisuke Koga and his team. The wine list is the work of sommelier Mototsugu Hayashi. The restaurant’s décor features numerous onyx gongs, symbols of rebirth.

Fashion as Social Energy

“Fashion as social energy,” a new exhibit at Palazzo Morando, encourages visitors to consider the ways in which fashion expresses different facets of modern life — from multiculturalism to intense consumerism. The exhibition was organized by Connecting Cultures, a nonprofit agency researching the ethical fashion movement, and the city of Milan, with the support of the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana and the Lombardy region, in partnership with Ermenegildo Zegna.

Excelsior Hotel Gallia

Milan’s Excelsior Hotel Gallia reopened its doors in May after a restoration by the Marco Piva architecture studio. Thanks to a new wing, the hotel now has meeting rooms, a rooftop bar and restaurant, and the first Italian Shiseido Spa, which spans the sixth and seventh floors. With 235 rooms, including 53 suites, the hotel features more than 500 pieces of artwork selected to match the building’s “Belle Époque” style.

Moschino

Located in the heart of Milan’s Porta Nuova district, the city’s first Moschino flagship is 1,292 square feet and resolutely modern in design, with white walls, cement floors and ample windows overlooking the street. In keeping with creative director Jeremy Scott’s concept of the store as a blank canvas, the interior features suspended black chrome shelves, benches covered in black leather and a monolithic stone bench. The store carries the Moschino ready-to-wear collections for men and women, swimwear, jewelry, perfume and tech accessories.

L.B.M. 1911

Mantova-based luxury brand Lubiam opened its first flagship dedicated to L.B.M. 1911 on May 1. Located in the heart of Milan’s fashion district, the two-level boutique is more than 1,615 square feet and carries ready-to-wear and accessories such as bags, shoes and foulards, some created exclusively for the store. The interior design recalls a jungle metropolis, drawing inspiration from New York, São Paulo and Berlin, with a mix of vintage and contemporary furnishings. Some of the older pieces belong to Lubiam’s Bianchi family and were chosen to create a continuum between the firm’s past and present. An opening cocktail is slated for fashion week.
